The last call of Science with and for Society, under H2020, closed on the 23rd of April. The amount of proposals and funds requested shows the commitment of the EU in this area. Applicants requested almost €700 million, 11 times the total available budget, and more than 400 project proposals have been submitted. The most successful topics have been: open schooling and collaboration on science education, with more than 100 project proposals; hands-on citizen science and frugal innovation, with 70 proposals; and science education outside the classroom, with more than 40 proposals. We would like to express our pleasant surprise to see these results, showing that even in difficult times, the commitment to these areas is real. This is a good occasion to present to you the SwafS projects EURADA has applied for or is already taking part in.

EURADA has participated in the last funding period under SwafS with three different project proposals on the following topics:

  • SwafS-09 – Supporting research organisations to implement gender equality plans;
  • SwafS-14 – Supporting the development of territorial Responsible Research and Innovation; and
  • Swafs-26 – Innovators of the future: bridging the gender gap.

For this last call, EURADA has engaged 15 of its members. The goal of the call is to find solutions on how to have more women, especially of a younger age, engage themselves in STEM entrepreneurship, and it required the participation of 16 European regions as third parties. One of EURADA’s objectives is to promote gender inclusiveness in STEM, and it has been shown that this is also the case for its members. EURADA spent over a month searching for partners for this call and received numerous letters of interest and good wishes from our members since this topic is of high relevance for them. The call for participation as third parties was a success amongst our network, with 15 of the required 16 regions engaged being members of EURADA. We would like to thank all of the interested parties!

Moving on to ongoing projects, EURADA is the communication partner of the project. Our members ART-ER and ADR Nord-Est are partners of this project leading pilot experimentations in Emilia-Romagna and North-East Romania. EURADA is also the partner dealing with third parties and experts (with the participation of Business Upper Austria, Kainuun Etu, ARR SA Bielsko-Biala and OKA); thus the collaboration from the members to be engaged in it has been effective and highly appreciated. For this project, EURADA has engaged 4 members as experts. TeRRItoria situates regions and local authorities as a factor to be considered in the overall concept of Responsible Research and Innovation. Adopting RRI into regional governance is not well documented and TeRRItoria will mark one of the first steps in exploring this unmapped territory.

For the forthcoming TetRRIs – Territorial Responsible Research and Innovation and Smart Specialization project, under the same call as TeRRItoria, EURADA is in charge of the exploitation of the results of the project, the communication and dissemination, and the organisation of the final conference in Brussels. This project includes two members of EURADA, the Regional Innovation Agency of South Great Plain (DARINNO) and the Regional Development Agency of Cantabria (SODERCAN). The territories selected for the project are four very different parts of Europe, giving the opportunity to highlight and compare different political and economic contexts and their effects on the implementation of RRI.

EURADA is committed to science and society, as is Europe. We strive to contribute by putting the regions and our members first, and we work to prioritise our members’ needs and interests.
