The Pan-Balkan Initiative for Digital Cooperation was launched in November 2017 at the international conference EDIT4tomorrow, in the context of the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU. The Initiative was launched by MOVE.BG and officially supported by digital leaders from the Western Balkan region.
As a first concrete step in this direction, on 12 March 2018 MOVE.BG organised the Hack the Balkans unconference in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event centered around three working groups (start-ups and ecosystem; women in ICT; cyber security) where experts from Bulgaria and the Balkan region were invited to provide their feedback, discuss concrete issues in the relevant field and make policy recommendations towards their resolution.
A further aim of Hack the Balkans and the distribution of the Call to Action report is to support ongoing efforts in the European integration process of the Western Balkan region, and to draw attention to the key role of the development of a digital and innovative economy plays in the process, particularly in the run-up to the EU-Western Balkans Summit that will take place in May, 2018.
