EURADA recently took part in the in-person meeting of the Just Transition Platform Working Group, held on 18–19 September 2025 in Florina, Greece.

This event brought together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders from across Europe to exchange insights on on how to best support regions undergoing the transition toward sustainable fuels.

The meeting opened with a welcoming speech by the Governor of Western Macedonia and the Mayor of Florina, who highlighted both the opportunities and the pressing challenges faced by the region. Their interventions were followed by intensive discussions on the future of just transition in the 2028–2034 Cohesion Policy framework, as well as the environmental and socio-economic implications of the post-coal era in Western Macedonia.

Action leaders took part in pitch updates of thework of each Action, giving participants an overview of on-going initiatives. The pitch updates were then followed by interactive breakout sessions per actions and Working Groups, allowing smaller groups to engage in targeted exchanges and define the next concrete steps to be taken in each action.

Throughout the sessions, speakers consistently highlighted that the Just Transition is a multi-layer and multi-faceted challenge. Beyond the technical and financial dimensions, there was strong emphasis on the human and social aspects of transformation. The need for both greater citizen engagement and talent attraction and retention were both highlighted as essential elements for creating sustainable economic growth in regions that are redefining their industrial identity.

The event also featured a site visit to the Chemical Process and Energy Resources Institute (CPERI) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). As one of Greece’s leading research centres in the fields of clean energy and sustainable development, CPERI provided an inspiring example of how innovation and research can directly contribute to greener regional economies. The programme also included guided visits through the city of Florina and a cultural evening featuring traditional dance and musical performances, offering participants an opportunity to experience the local heritage of Florina.

This in-person meeting offered a highly valuable opportunity to exchange views with key stakeholders, contribute to discussions on the implementation of the Just Transition Platform, and strengthen EURADA’s role in supporting regions navigating the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
