Communities at the Forefront: Highlights from the 3rd CLIMAAX Webstival

Article written by Athanasia-Maria Tompolidi - Policy and Project Officer

The 3rd CLIMAAX Webstival moderated by EURADA gathered 310 participants over two vibrant days under the theme “Together towards resilience: Communities at the forefront.”

Day 1 opened with an introduction to the CLIMAAX project by the project Coordinator from Deltares, followed by a keynote speech from the project’s Policy Officer from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) highlighting the CLIMAAX project’s central role within the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. The presentation from the CLIMAAX project’s Co-coordinator from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) gave strong emphasis on the regional dimension of climate adaptation, recognising that regions are on the frontline of climate impacts and need tailored tools and support. The day concluded with the roundtable “Bridging Projects, Strengthening Regions: Shared tools for Climate Resilience” where MIP4Adapt and the sister projects: TransformAr, IMPETUS, NEVERMORE, and P2R discussed lessons learned and best practices - an exchange enriched by audience questions reflecting real regional needs on the ground.

Day 2, again moderated by EURADA, built on this momentum with a keynote speech from MIP4Adapt on the importance of whatwe assess and how we assess climate risks. The project partners from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) showcased how the CLIMAAX Handbook has become a powerful bridge connecting tools, data, and practical experience, enabling regions to apply methods with clarity and confidence. During the Technical Session 2 from the project partners from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (STICHTING VU) demonstrated the potential of innovation through big data, data-driven algorithms, and Early Warning Systems (EWS), while the project partners from the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) highlighted how the CLIMAAX Community of Practice (CoP) remains the engine of impact - turning shared learning into shared progress and strengthening the regional dimension of the initiative.

Overall, the Webstival offered two inspiring days of exchange, ideas, and collective reflection - an experience that not only informed but encouraged. The depth of engagement and the enthusiasm of participants reaffirmed the importance of working together to advance Climate Adaptation and resilience. With the completion of this event, we carry forward a renewed sense of purpose, confident that each of us can contribute meaningful value to a Climate Change movement that empowers our regions, supports our communities, and safeguards our planet. CLIMAAX mission hasn’t finished yet, as we will prepare the final event of the project, which will take place in Brussels during the autumn of 2026.
