EURADA launches new Working Group on Insular Regions: Empowering Europe’s Island Communities

Article written by Camille Herlaut - Junior Policy and Project Officer

On Friday March 6th, EURADA launched its new Working Group (WG) on Insular Regions with a kick-off meeting coordinated by La Réunion Développement. Insular Regions face unique challenges and opportunities in today’s rapidly changing world. Th[AT1.1]e WG is bringing together regional development agencies from across Europe with the aim to promote collaboration, share best practices, and develop innovative solutions tailored to the needs of Europe’s island communities.

A New Platform for Island Collaboration

The kick-off meeting marked the official launch of the EURADA WG on Insular Regions, a platform designed to address the specific needs of island territories in areas such as sustainable development, digital transformation, and economic resilience. The event gathered representatives from France (La Réunion Développement), Spain (Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias), Croatia (Zadra - Zadar County Development Agency, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County), and Greece (Regional Development Fund of Attica, Regional Development Fund Region of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, Region of Central Greece and the Region of the Ionian islands (Kefalonia and Ithaca)).

During the meeting, participants engaged in dynamic discussions, focusing on the shared challenges faced by insular regions, including access to European funding, climate change adaptation, seasonal demography and the diversification of local economies. The exchange of experiences and expertise highlighted the importance of interregional cooperation and the potential for joint initiatives that can drive sustainable growth.

The WG identified several priority areas for action. Participants emphasised the need for improved access to European funding opportunities, the development of climate adaptation strategies, and the promotion of economic diversification to enhance the resilience of island communities.

During the kick-off meeting was discussed the development of a roadmap for the WG, serving as a strategic guide for future activities and strong engagement, to ensure the alignment with the broader European policies, particularly in view of the European Commission’s preparation of the first-ever EU Strategy for Islands and Coastal Communities, expected in 2026 that is linked to the European Ocean Pact.

The WG will serve as a dedicated platform for ongoing dialogue and resource sharing, facilitating continuous engagement among members and relevant stakeholders.

The launch of the EURADA WG on Insular Regions reflects a growing recognition of the unique role that islands play in Europe’s economic and social landscape. Islands are not only hubs of biodiversity and cultural heritage but also laboratories for innovation and sustainability. Through this initiative, EURADA and its members are committed to supporting Insular Regions in turning their challenges into opportunities, ensuring that they can thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
