A stronger Europe, better connected to the world under the Global Gateway

By Julia Colomer

The Global Gateway: The European innovative project which aims to deploy digital networks and infrastructures with partners from Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America to the Indo-Pacific through investments in climate and energy, transport, digital, health, education and research.

Through the Global Gateway initiative nearly € 300 billion will be invested through actions between 2021- 2027 to establish a lasting global recovery, aligned with the needs of our own businesses and the EU's own interests. This is an important strategy for Europe and beyond as the pandemic has shown the importance of the necessities we have in common and how much we need each other around the world.

The main objective of this initiative is to build strong relationships between Europe and the rest of the world on the main post-pandemic challenges we will face for the future, such as tackling climate change, improving healthcare systems, boosting competitiveness and security of global supply chains.

The Global Gateway will be implemented with a Team Europe approach, that brings together funding by the EU, its Member States and European financial institutions (including the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and seek to mobilise the private sector to leverage investments for a transformational impact). This will ensure the investments to be targeted and more effective, strengthening existing initiatives and fostering new ones.

The model that the EU wants to achieve is a model based on mutual trust, respect, and values of all parties: rule of law, human rights and international norms and standards. Therefore, the partnerships will be based on 6 principles:

democratic values and high standards

good governance and transparency

equal partnerships

green and clean

security focused

catalysing private sector investment

As Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission expressed:” We will support smart investments in quality infrastructure, respecting the highest social and environmental standards, in line with the EU’s values and standards. The Global Gateway strategy is a template for how Europe can build more resilient connections with the world."

The main areas of this trusting and fair partnership will be based on some key areas of partnership:

  • Digital sector for the global digital ecosystem;
  • Climate and energy. The Global Gateway will support this green transformation, on the way to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and commitments of the Paris Agreement;
  • Transport through worldwide infrastructure investments that create sustainable, smart, resilient, inclusive, and safe networks in all modes of transport;
  • Health. The EU will be working with partner countries to diversify their pharmaceutical supply chains;
  • Education and research, investing in quality education, including digital education, paying particular attention to the inclusion of girls and women and other vulnerable groups. It will assist partner countries to transform their education systems and facilitate mobility of students, staff, teachers, and trainees.
