EU Proposal on the European labour market statistics on businesses (LBM)

The European Commission is working on a proposal to revise European labor market statistics on businesses. In this

regard, it is holding a public consultation to gather input from stakeholders. The consultation survey includes both a backward-looking assessment of current EU legislation as well as forward-looking modernisation options. This initiative aims to keep European LMB statistics relevant, coherent and comparable despite societal and economic changes.

Background

Labour market statistics on businesses (LMB) are official statistics gathered at the EU level on companies and how they perform in relation to labor markets, such as labour supply, demand, and costs. Important policy goals, such as macroeconomic convergence, social cohesion, price stability, and gender equality, are served also by these statistics. They assist in comprehending and comparing the situation in various EU Member States.

The key questions are whether existing business labor market statistics continue to provide the evidence needed for EU policies in an efficient and proportionate manner for decision-making in democratic societies, what are the most critical current gaps, including new data needs, and what is the potential for simplification.

Objectives

The main aims of this initiative are to:

  • make statistics more up-to-date and more comparable across countries
  • expand coverage of the economy
  • assure the gathering of data on the annual unadjusted gender pay gap.

Target audience

  • Users of statistics: All levels of government and policymakers, academia and research, non-governmental and international organizations, the media, and the general public are all involved.
  • Producers of statistics: national statistics institutions, as well as other relevant national authorities.
  • Institutional data providers: public authorities providing administrative source data for labour market statistics on businesses to statistics producers.
  • Individual data providers: enterprises responding already or potentially to questionnaires on earnings, labour costs and job openings.
