Murcia's Municipalities Lead Climate Change Action

Article written by Neus Armenjach - Junior Communication Officer

The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Sustainable Energy stands as a program by the European Commission recognised as the most extensive urban initiative globally for climate and energy. It unites thousands of local and regional authorities voluntarily committed to implementing the European Union’s climate and energy goals in their territories.

During the latest meeting of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in Tenerife (the Canary Islands), Murcian municipalities presented two pioneering initiatives to combat climate change. Coordinated by the Regional Ministry of Enterprise through our members in Murcia – Instituto de Fomento de la Región De Murcia –, the projects, Life Adaptate and Nevermore, stood out for their innovative approaches.

On the one hand, Nevermore focuses on climate research excellence, identifying risks specific to the Mediterranean climate of Murcia. With an EU funding of €213,750, it involves the participation of municipalities such as Abanilla, Albudeite, and Aledo, emphasising local vulnerabilities, especially in the desertic region of Murcia.

On the other hand, Life Adaptate, with a budget of €1,763,487, strengthens municipal commitment to climate action by integrating adaptation plans with existing mitigation strategies.

Both European Union programs, enhance the commitment of European municipalities to the new Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy by developing local adaptation plans that will be integrated into the previous mitigation objectives of several municipalities, providing a comprehensive approach to combating climate change.

Joaquín Gómez, Director of INFO Murcia, highlights the significant role in fostering these initiatives. He insisted on the region's dedication since 2013 in supporting municipalities in their efforts for climate action, therefore creating a resilient region of Murcia.
